Abingdon is the oldest historic town in Virginia. The Barter Theatre located in Abingdon opened on June 10, 1933. It is the longest running professional theatre in the nation. Also, the Martha Washington Inn & Spa began life as the retirement home for Gen Robert Preston in the War of 1812. During the War between the States, the home became a hospital for the Confederate and Union soldiers. After the war, the Inn became Martha Washington College for young women. Today it is a wonderful hotel, spa with a 5 star restaurant. It is located across the street from the Barter Theatre.
